UN: 15 million Syrians in need of humanitarian assistance

WORLD, Dec. 08 (YPA) – Geir Pedersen, the UN special envoy for Syria, said that that 15 million Syrians need humanitarian aid.

 

“9 to 10 million Syrians are living in poverty, and almost 15 million are in need of humanitarian aid,” Pedersen said after meeting Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad in Damascus on Wednesday, adding that this should not be accepted.

He stressed that the current situation is not in anyone’s favor, so “we must address these issues and look at the situation of refugees and internally displaced persons, in addition to discussing the issue of detainees and abductees.”

The UN envoy pointed out that his visit to Damascus “is a continuation of the deep and continuous dialogue with the Syrian government.

During his visit, he discussed with the Syrian government the situation in northern Syria and ways to prevent escalation.
