Beijing calls on Moscow, Kiev to exert maximum efforts in protecting nuclear facilities

WORLD, Nov. 24 (YPA)- China’s deputy representative to the United Nations, Geng Shuang said at a meeting of the UN Security Council that his country calls on Moscow and Kiev to make all efforts to protect nuclear facilities.

Geng Shuang added, “Over the weekend, The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station was hit by the heaviest bombing in months, causing extensive damage to the plant. The issue of securing the protection of nuclear facilities is a very important problem… China calls on all parties to act rationally and make every effort to ensure the security of nuclear facilities and prevent nuclear accidents.”

He continued: “Beijing urges the parties concerned to exercise restraint and avoid actions that exacerbate the confrontation and prevent the confrontation from spiraling out of control. In particular, international humanitarian law must be strictly adhered to, and every effort must be made to protect civilians and infrastructure. The international community must urgently help Ukraine repair damaged energy infrastructure.”

Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that last Saturday and Sunday morning, Ukrainian forces fired more than 20 high-caliber artillery shells on the territory of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station, as well as along the power line that feeds the plant with energy.
