WORLD, Nov. 08 (YPA) – The Algerian authorities have filed a formal application to join the BRICS group, an official at Algerian Foreign Ministry said.
On Monday, Algerian special envoy Leila Zerrougui confirmed that her country was the last to formally apply for BRICS membership.
“We had the opportunity to participate in the recent BRICS summit in China, in which the Algerian president was invited to participate,” she added, noting that it was held in late June, via video conference.
This summit came out with openness to the inclusion of other countries in the group, she said, noting that Algeria had submitted the request and Russia and China had welcomed the accession.
Zerrougui revealed that the rest of the BRICS countries are studying Algeria’s file before deciding on it, and it concerns South Africa, India and Brazil.
On October 19, 2022, Saudi Arabia expressed interest in joining the BRICS, according to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who paid a state visit to the kingdom.
Ramaphosa said, as reported by local media at the time: “The Saudi crown prince has expressed the kingdom’s desire to join the BRICS.”
