Socotra archipelago witnesses uprising against UAE presence

SOCOTRA, Jul. 06 (YPA) – The Yemeni Socotra archipelago province witnessed on Wednesday an uprising by the island’s sheikhs against the UAE and its militias, denouncing the UAE’s attempts to humiliate them.

This came at the inauguration ceremony of the Emirati honor for the sheikhs, which turned into a massive demonstration of the sheikhs and the sons of Socotra calling for the departure of the UAE and its militias from Socotra.

Local residents said that the sheikhs and dignitaries of the Socotra archipelago gathered in front of the Diwan of Sultan Ali bin Afrar, threatening to close it after a series of insults practiced by the UAE against the sheikhs and sons of Socotra, taking advantage of the poverty in the country as a result of the war and siege.

The residents added that the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) deliberately looted the rights of the sheikhs, humiliated them and belittled them in front of their tribes.

The sheikhs expelled “Salem Daheq Ali”, one of the members of the Development Committee of the “Khalifa bin Zayed Foundation” who had tampered with their entitlements.

It is worth noting that the island of Socotra witnessed many protests demanding the departure of the UAE from the island, the last of which was on September 13, 2019.
