Austria’s Foreign Ministry: EU membership should not be offered to Ukraine

SANAA, April 24 (YPA) – Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg expressed his belief that EU membership should not be offered to Ukraine.

The move came during his speech at the European Media Summit in Lech M. Arleberg.

The minister was quoted by Ukrainian media as saying that Ukraine should not get candidate status in June, as its president Volodymyr Zelenskiy expects.

According to the Austrian Minister, some states in the Western Balkans have come a much longer way to reach their status as a candidate.

According to Heute newspaper, the Austrian minister does not see the need for Ukraine to join the European Union even in the future.

He believes there must be other models of Kiev’s rapprochement with Europe — under an already signed agreement, as well as integration into a common economic space.
