SANAA, Jan. 30 (YPA) – The European Parliament called on the UAE to end the systematic suppression against political opposition and the immediate and unconditional release of all prisoners of conscience held arbitrarily in its prisons.
11 European parliamentarians sent a letter to the President of the Emirates, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, stating that the number of prisoners of conscience into jails after the expiry of their original sentence.
They emphasized that “the detention has become illegal, and a violation of international human rights standards and UAE laws relating to fair trials and due process of law.”
The letter stated “Abu Dhabi transferred the held to counseling centers in prison without bringing any charges or providing them with an administrative or judicial decision specifying the duration of their detention.”
