US urges its citizens to leave Ethiopia

SANAA, Nov. 16 (YPA) – The United States of America on Monday called on its nationals to leave Ethiopia immediately, warning that there would be no evacuation similar to those carried out in Afghanistan.

This comes as rebel forces led by the Liberation Front of Tigray are advancing, prompting the embassy to offer tickets to US citizens for loans if they don’t have the price, Axios reported.

State Department spokesperson Ned Price said US passport holders should not expect a Kabul-style airlift if the fighting reaches Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. That’s not going to happen, Price told Axios, calling the Afghanistan withdrawal a “unique and extraordinary situation.”

Price said there is nothing to invite Americans to stay in Ethiopia. They have to leave on commercial flights now.
