Haiti earthquake death toll rises to 2,200

SANAA, Aug. 20 (YPA) – The death toll from the earthquake that struck Haiti last Saturday, measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale, has risen to 2,200.
Five days after the disaster, the authorities are facing a dilemma in delivering humanitarian aid safely to the affected people in isolated areas.

Since the beginning of June, it has become impossible to guarantee safe passage within two kilometers of the national road that crosses the devastated slum of Martissant, due to the clashes between gangs in the Haitian capital.

The Haitian authorities are facing a major challenge in delivering humanitarian aid safely to hundreds of thousands of affected people, some of whom live in isolated areas, five days after the earthquake that devastated southwestern Haiti and killed about 2,200 people.
The Haitian Civil Defense Authority had said that the death toll on Wednesday evening reached 2,189 dead, 332 missing and more than 12,000 wounded. The authority wrote on Twitter that “rescue operations are continuing.”
