SANAA, Jul. 27 (YPA) – Tunisian President Kais Saied on Monday reiterated his commitment to ensuring rights, freedoms and respect for the democratic process, in light of recent events in the country, where he dismissed the government and froze parliament, in a move described by some as a coup.
In a meeting with the President of the Tunisian League for Defence of Human Rights, its Secretary-General, President of the National Union of Journalists and President of Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights, Qais Saied reiterated his unwavering commitment to ensuring rights and freedoms and respect for the rule of law and the democratic process, the presidency said in a statement.
Earlier on Monday, the United States of America called on President Qais Saied to adhere to the principles of democracy and human rights.
On Sunday, Tunisian President Kais Saied ousted Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi’s government, suspended parliament, and revoked the immunity of all its members, in response to perceived government incompetence in the face of a worsening economic situation and the hard-hitting Covid-19 pandemic.
