ICJHR demands UAE to allow UN committee to visit its prisons

SANAA, Jul. 06 (YPA) – The International Center for Justice and Human Rights ( ICJHR) called on the UAE authorities to enable a UN committee to visit prisons in the UAE and know about the conditions of prisoners of conscience.

The Center stressed that human rights organizations and bodies, UN rapporteurs and the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention should be allowed to visit UAE in order to interview prisoners, human rights activists, politicians and bloggers to monitor the human rights situation inside UAE and document violations.

The Center indicated that eight years have passed since the mass trial of 94 activists, which included employees in several positions in the country.

The Center called on UAE authorities to immediately and unconditionally release the 94 detainees and all political detainees and human rights defenders in UAE and to stop violating their rights to freedom of opinion.

It stressed that all allegations of torture and other ill-treatment should be investigated promptly, independently and impartially, and those responsible should be held accountable and victims able to obtain effective remedies, reparation and rehabilitation.

The center called on UAE authorities to stop the policy of collective punishment against the families of detainees and their children and to respect their right to travel, work, study and dispose of their money and property.
