800 arrested during protest marches in Algeria

SANAA, May 23 (YPA) – Algerian security forces arrested 800 protesters during Friday’s 118th popular movement calling for a radical regime change, The Algerian League for the Defense of Human Rights (LADDH) said.

The Deputy President LADDH, Saeed Salehi, said that most of those arrested in the capital would be presented to the attorney general on Sunday.

Algerian security forces are deployed in the streets to control the security situation as protest marches take place following the Algerian Interior Ministry’s decision to require demonstrators to obtain a permit before going out at any protest marches.

Algerian security forces have forcibly banned the popular movement’s ongoing marches for more than two years, and hundreds of protesters have been arrested in various parts of the country.

Dozens of detainees were subjected to trials, which sentenced nearly 50 people to prison on various charges, most notably the gathering, and the violation of decrees requiring permission before any mass march was held.
