Former Prime Minister of Qatar criticizes Gulf Cooperation Council

SANAA, March 21 (YPA) – Former Qatari Prime Minister Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani has attacked the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), describing it as “a media mouthpiece whose benefits are no more than statements.”

“It is clear day by day that the benefits of the GCC are only marginally beneficial to some GCC countries, whether it is a denunciation of certain parties, or support of the positions of one country or those of some regional and international issues,” he wrote in a series of tweets Saturday evening.

He added that the Council’s statements also came “to express views on other issues that members in the Council are unable to respond to themselves, without the assistance of others. This is fine, but the council has become just a media mouthpiece that is blowing here and there without a specific goal that is useful at the national level.”

He continued: “Unfortunately, this is not what the founding fathers aspired to when the Council was established,” stressing that its current status “does not meet the aspirations of the people of the Council. They want the Council to achieve many hopes of cohesion, harmony and unity, so that it can withstand and continue to face the challenges it faces.”
