Sudan warns about filling Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam
SANAA, March 9 (YPA) – The Sudanese Ministry of Irrigation issued an urgent warning regarding the filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam next July.
The Sudanese Undersecretary of the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources, Daw Al-Bayt Abdul Rahman, said that the ministry’s engineers in the reservoirs and Nile water departments are working to calculate all possible scenarios due to the unilateral filling of the Renaissance Dam in next July.
Dhao Al-Bayt confirmed that these preparations come to reduce the expected negative effects, and this includes modifications in the systems of emptying and filling the Al-Rosayris and Jabal Al-Awliya reservoirs.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Irrigation warned farmers, herders, drinking water stations and irrigation projects in the Blue Nile regions from (Damazin to Khartoum) that the quantities of water coming from the Blue Nile are likely to decrease during the period from April to the end of September, according to Sudan News Agency.
Dhao Al-Bayt indicated that water levels will decrease in this sector. The areas of irrigated cliffs along this sector will also be affected, as will the entrances to drinking water stations and irrigation pumps.
The Sudanese Undersecretary of the Ministry of Irrigation stated that the White Nile sector from the two mountains to Jabal Al-Awliya will also be affected by the filling of the Renaissance Dam.
