Sudan: Supreme Court confirms execution of 29 intelligence officers

SANAA, Feb. 17 (YPA) – Sudan’s Supreme Court has upheld death sentences for 29 intelligence officers for torturing and killing a teacher arrested during anti-government protests that toppled Omar al-Bashir, a prosecution lawyer said Tuesday.

“This week’s ruling by the Supreme Court confirmed the December 2019 death sentences of 29 intelligence officers,” lawyer Adel Abdelghani explained .

He added the men “could still appeal the ruling before the constitutional court.”

The killing of one of the detainees sparked widespread public outrage that led to popular demonstrations leading to the ouster of former President Omar al-Bashir in April 2019.

Al-Bashir, who ruled Sudan with an iron fist for three decades, has been imprisoned in Khartoum’s Kober prison since his ouster, where he was convicted in a corruption case and his trial continues in the case of a military coup against the regime.
