TEHRAN, Feb. 14 (YPA) – Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday called on Washington to prove its sincerity in announcing its retreat from providing military support and building peace in Yemen.
“The Americans must prove this in practice and prove how honest they are,” Ali Asghar Haji, a senior assistant to the Iranian foreign minister, said in an interview with the Russian ‘Sputnik’ agency, commenting on Washington’s announcement to stop military support for operations in Yemen.
Haji added that the Saudi regime has committed the biggest massacre against the Yemenis in the century, and Washington provided them with support, arms and military cooperation.” If they retract these decisions and help establish peace, we see this as a major step to fix the grave mistakes they committed against the Yemeni people.”
Earlier, Iran had welcomed Washington’s announcement to stop its support for the war in Yemen, considering that “stopping the American support and not selling weapons to the Saudi coalition, if not a political maneuver, could be a step towards correcting the mistakes of the past.”
The U.S. President Joe Biden announced recently that the United States would stop its support for the Saudi-led Arab coalition operations in Yemen, but he pledged to continue helping the kingdom defend its lands. He also stressed that his country would intensify its efforts to achieve a peaceful settlement for the Yemeni crisis.
