SANAA, Feb. 2 (YPA) – The White House said that US President Joe Biden intends to maintain customs duties on aluminum imports from the UAE.
President Biden’s decision is a reversal of a step taken by former President Donald Trump to end customs duties on aluminum imports from the UAE on the last day of his presidency.
Biden said in a statement issued by the White House: “I think it is necessary and appropriate in light of our national security interests that we maintain at this time the customs treatment applied to aluminum imports from the United Arab Emirates.”
The customs exemption on aluminum imports from the UAE was scheduled to take effect tomorrow, Wednesday.
Trump said on January 20 that he would exempt the UAE from 10% customs duties imposed on most aluminum imports.
The outgoing president added – at the time, that “the two countries reached a quota agreement that would restrict aluminum imports.” He pointed out that “the agreement was reached in light of the important security relationship between the two countries.”
