SANAA, Jan. 26 (YPA) – Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh announced that a political delegation from the Taliban movement headed by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar arrived in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Tuesday morning.
Khatibzadeh said that during its stay in Tehran, the political delegation of the Taliban would hold meetings with officials in Iran, including the foreign minister and Iran’s special representative for Afghanistan affairs, and would hold discussions on the peace process in Afghanistan and issues related to this process.
The spokesman also pointed out that the delegation arrived in Tehran this morning at the invitation of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was received by officials in the ministry.
The Special Representative of the Iranian Foreign Minister for Afghanistan Affairs, Muhammad Ibrahim Taherian, met on Monday with Afghan Foreign Minister Muhammad Hanif Atamer.
The Taliban delegation’s visit to Tehran was preceded by Jake Sullivan’s national security advisor to President Joe Biden, to his Afghan counterpart that the United States will review in February the agreement concluded with the “Taliban” movement.
Sources on both sides of the Afghan conflict said this month that negotiators were awaiting Biden’s inauguration to see if he would stick to the timeline set by Donald Trump for withdrawing US forces.
