145 killed, wounded in violence in Sudanese Darfur

KHARTOUM, Jan. 17 (YPA) – A Sudanese medical authority announced on Sunday that the death toll from violent events in El Geneina, West Darfur state, has risen to 145 dead and wounded.

“The bloody events of Saturday in the city of El Geneina, left about 48 dead and 97 injured, according to preliminary statistics, and this toll is expected to increase,” the Sudanese Doctors Committee said, in a statement.

The medical personnel are making a great effort to provide medical care to the wounded and injured, in light of the extreme difficulty in movement and the shortage of medical and assistance personnel, the statement added.

An urgent appeal was directed to the state government, to secure health facilities and provide transportation, accompanied by regular forces, to enable medical personnel to reach the wounded stranded in the areas of clashes and evacuate them to treatment institutions.
