SANAA, Jun. 12 (YPA) – Reuters quoted the US Defense Department as saying that the US military has not stopped withdrawing its forces from Afghanistan despite the issuance of a new law that prohibits further cuts without informing Congress.
“At the present time, no new orders have been issued affecting the continuation of the withdrawal of forces and it is expected that the reduction will reach 2,500 soldiers by January 15, 2021,” the Ministry of Defense statement said.
“If they keep cutting, it will be a violation of the law,” one congressman told Reuters.
The Pentagon action is likely to anger Republican and Democratic lawmakers opposed to further troop cuts, given renewed concerns about the outgoing Trump administration’s contempt for Congress.
