2021 will be year of ending war, achieving peace in Yemen: UN envoy

SANAA, Dec. 27 (YPA) – The UN envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths hoped that 2021 would be a year of ending war and achieving comprehensive peace in Yemen.

The UN envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths, said today, Sunday, that the time has come for the Yemeni parties to meet to reach a political solution through negotiations.

Griffiths said, in a statement issued on Sunday by the electronic magazine of the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, that the time has come for the Yemeni parties to meet to reach a political solution through negotiations.

“2020 was another harsh year for Yemenis, with continued bloodshed, displacement, economic decline and the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic,” he added.

He continued, “We tried to stop obliging the warning parties to stop the fighting, take measures to end the siege, alleviate the suffering and quickly resume the political process.

The UN envoy expected, according to his statement, that the new year 2021 would focus on the needs of Yemenis, away from narrow horizons, and the resumption of a peace process that includes ending the war and conflict completely, in additional to the parties will perform better in respecting and protecting the rights and freedoms of Yemenis.

In October, the UN envoy confirmed, during a briefing to the UN Security Council, “the continuation of negotiations on the draft joint declaration,” noting that “the two parties of the conflict still involved in the process.
