Violent protests erupt in Philadelphia after black man killed

SANAA, Oct. 28 (YPA) – The city of Philadelphia in  Pennsylvania has witnessed widespread protests on Wednesday, violence and mass looting of shops after a black man was killed by police on Monday.

The governor’s office, Tom Wolf, said several hundred National Guard personnel are being deployed in Philadelphia to protect the right to peaceful assembly and protest while keeping people safe,” according to NBC.

Protests in the city erupted Monday after Philadelphia police shot Walter Wallace Jr., 27, while responding to a call about a man armed with a knife around 2:40 p.m.

Police have said officers ordered Wallace to drop the knife several times, but he continued to advance on them while holding the knife. Both officers at the scene fired, striking Wallace in the shoulder and chest, officials said.

This is the third time that a black citizen has been killed by US police following the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.

Wallace’s father confirmed that his son struggled with mental health issues and was on medication. “Why the police did not use electric detonators instead of shooting?” the father asked.
