US announces agreed of $2.4 billion weapon sale to Taiwan

SANAA, Oct. 27 (YPA) – The US State Department announced on Tuesday that it has agreed to sell Taiwan one hundred “Harpoon” missile defense systems in a deal worth 2.4 billion dollars.
The US State Department statement indicated that the deal “will strengthen Taiwan’s defense capabilities, after China announced on Monday the imposition of sanctions on US companies related to previous deals to sell weapons to Taiwan, which it considers an integral part of its territory.”
China has imposed sanctions on US companies and individuals over arms sales.
The list of companies included in the sanctions included Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon of the United States, according to what was published by the official Chinese newspaper “People”.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry attributed this decision to US arms sales to Taiwan, which China considers one of its territories, while claiming Taiwan is an independent country.
