UN High Commissioner for Human Rights urges Saudi Arabia to respect rights
SANAA, Feb. 27 (YPA) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, urged Saudi Arabia to respect freedom of expression and peaceful assembly and to review the rulings against activists, clerics and journalists as it prepares to host the G20 summit this year.
In a speech to the United Nations Human Rights Council, Bachelet called on the kingdom to release Saudi female activists in detention because they called for “discriminatory policy reforms.”
“I also demand full transparency in the ongoing judicial procedures and comprehensive accountability regarding the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who is residing in the United States by Saudi agents, at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October 2018,” she added.
