Yemen celebrates Arab Literacy Day

SANAA, Jan. 8 (YPA) – Yemen celebrated the Arab Literacy Day, which falls on January 8 of each year.

At the ceremony organized by the Literacy and Adult Education Organization in Sanaa, the Supreme Political Council Member Ahmad al-Rahwi and Deputy Prime Minister for National Vision Affairs Mahmoud al-Junaid stressed the importance of building a comprehensive national societal strategy for literacy and adult education.

Al-Rahwi and al-Junaid indicated that Yemen, like other countries, faces many development challenges, including the challenge of eliminating illiteracy, which was given special attention in the national vision for building the modern Yemeni state.

They touched on the various causes that fuel illiteracy, noting to the new challenge that has been brought about by Saudi-led coalition’s aggressive war, which represented in immigration and internal displacement.

In turn, Head of the Literacy and Adult Education Organization Fuad al-Shami reviewed the organization’s efforts to eradicate illiteracy through activating its plans and programs.

Al-Shami called for mobilizing efforts of all actors to eliminate illiteracy, as literacy is a weapon to face societal and development challenges.
