NATO officially announces emergency meeting in Brussels

BRUSSELS, Jan. 6 (YPA) – The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) announced that it would hold a meeting Monday at the level of delegates at the organization’s headquarters in the Belgian capital Brussels.

“The North Atlantic Alliance will meet at the ambassadorial level this afternoon at NATO headquarters in Brussels,” the organization said in a statement.

The statement indicated that NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg would hold a press conference after the meeting.

This comes after tension rose between Washington and Tehran after the Pentagon announced, at dawn last Friday, launching an air strike near Baghdad International Airport, killing the Iranian Quds Force’s commander Qassem Soleimani, Deputy Head of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Force Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, and others.

Meanwhile, Tehran said that it would respond harshly to the assassination, and a number of Iranian officials were quoted as saying that the response would be military against American forces in the region.

Washington held Soleimani, who it was putting him on its list of terrorism, responsible for several attacks that killed American citizens and planning for new attacks.
