Nearly 200 Algerian fans detained in France

PARIS, July 20 (YPA) – French police arrested 198 people in several cities of the country who staged spontaneous demonstrations for fans of the Algerian national team, which won the African Cup of Nations football, after defeating Senegal on Friday night.

According to the morning report of BFM TV, at least 177 Algerian fans were detained, and the rest were released several hours later. However, in Paris alone, there were 102 detainees were released and about 86 still in detention.

“Throughout the night, police, rescue workers and civil servants across France were in their place to ensure order and safety for all. I thank them for their work, professionalism and duty, ” French interior minister, Christophe Castaner wrote on Twitter on Friday.

After the Algerian national team’s victory, thousands of Algerian fans marched with flags and fireworks heading for the Champs Elysees, where riots and clashes with police took place in recent weeks in the triumphant march of the national team.
