Venezuela withdraws from OAS

SANAA, April (YPA) – The Venezuelan government has said that until Saturday, April 27, it was listed as a member of the Organization of American States (OAS), but any decision taken by that body after that date would have no repercussions in its country.

“As of this date, any document signed or issued by the Organization of American States will have no political or legal effect on the Venezuelan State and its institutions,” the Venezuelan foreign ministry said in a statement.

On Tuesday, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry announced that its government had decided to leave the Organization of American States (OAS), after the organization’s Permanent Council had recognized the opposition speaker of the Venezuelan parliament, Juan Guaido, as president of the country.

“This is one of the harshest decisions taken by the [Organization of American States] (Recognition of Gabon),” the foreign ministry said in a statement. As well as using vulgar blackmail to pressure Member States, to meet Washington’s policy desires. ”

“The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela confirms its irrevocable decision to leave the Organization of American States (OAS) as of April 27, according to the complaint submitted two years ago and under the relevant procedures,” the statement said.

“Venezuela cannot remain a member of an organization that serves the imperialist interests of the US administration,” the statement read.

The move comes after the organization’s Permanent Council recognized the representative of Guaido with a representative of Venezuela.

Most Latin American countries have already recognized Juan Guaido,as “interim president” of Venezuela following his announcement that he assumed the presidency of the country on Jan. 23.
