US, UK receive double blow from Moscow in UN Security Council

SANAA, Feb. 27 (YPA) – Russia directed a double blow to UK, France and US at the UN Security Council’s meeting on Monday to discuss a draft resolution submitted by Britain calling for extending sanctions on Yemen for an additional year.

The draft resolution came in response to a UN report considers that Tehran violated the arms embargo imposed on Yemen, and another text provided by Moscow; proposed the extension of the ban on sending arms to Yemen until February 2019 without any reference to Iran.

The Russian double blow represented in two points, the first is that it annulled the British resolution and the second that it passed its project instead.

Britain saw the Russian rejection of their project just an alignment with Iran.

The US also sought to emulate the British position, and worked for months to prove Tehran’s involvement in providing Ansarallah (Houthis) with expertise, money and weapons.

Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzya said the wording of Britain’s resolution was a threat not only to Yemen but to the region as a whole.

Despite the text of the British draft was amended, Russia vetoed it.
