Saudi Arabia fails for second time to win UNHRC seat

NEW YORK, Oct. 10 (YPA) – Saudi Arabia has failed for the second time to win a seat on the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) after a vote on membership for the 2025-2027 term.

This is the second time in a row that the kingdom has lost its bid to secure a seat on the 47-member council, whose members are elected by the UN General Assembly.

In 2020, it also came in last place in a secret ballot held at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The kingdom obtained 117 votes, the fewest among six Asia-Pacific countries competing for five seats on a regional list.

Human rights groups welcomed the vote, saying the results showed that Riyadh’s attempts to demonstrate that it is taking steps to improve its human rights record have failed.
