Raising customs dollar sparks popular protests in Hadramout

HADRAMOUT, Jan. 16 (YPA) – Hundreds of people staged massive popular protests in the city of Seiyun of Hadramout province to reject the decision of the coalition-backed government to raise the customs dollar.

In a protest rally, the participants demand the removal of the forces of the “First Military Region” run by the Islah Party from Wadi Hadramout.

Some sources added that the demonstrators held banners that included indignant expressions about the decision of the government to raise the value of the customs dollar, and to raise the prices of food and basic commodities, which was taken last Tuesday.

The demonstration came amid a state of tension between the pro-Emirati factions on and the militants of the Islah Party supported by Saudi Arabia, over the type of military force that may be present in the Wadi and Desert of Hadramout.
