First US ambassador to Sudan takes up his duties

KHARTOUM, Aug. 25 (YPA) – The US Embassy in Khartoum announced on Wednesday that the first US ambassador to Sudan in nearly 25 years had assumed his duties.

The embassy said, in a statement, that “Ambassador John Godfrey, as a prominent representative of the US government, will work to strengthen relations between the American and Sudanese peoples, and support the Sudanese people’s aspirations for freedom, peace, justice and democratic transition.”

Since October 25, 2021, Sudan has witnessed popular protests calling for the return of civilian rule and rejecting exceptional measures imposed by the head of the Transitional Sovereign Council, army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

Those who reject these measures consider these measures a “military coup,” while Al-Burhan said that it aims to “correct the course of the transitional phase,” and pledged to hand over power through elections or a national consensus.
