Qataris elect first legislative assembly

DOHA, Oct. 02 (YPA) – Qataris started on Saturday voting, in the first legislative elections in the country, to choose two-thirds of the members of the Shura Council.

According to Reuters, Qataris elect 30 members from 45 seats.

The voting process had sparked controversy before it began on “the electoral inclusion and citizenship.”

The legislative authority falls within the council’s powers, in addition to its approval of the state’s general policies, including its budget.

A total of 183 candidates, including 18 women, are competing in these elections, through centers located in 30 regions in the Gulf state, which will soon witness the hosting of a global event, the FIFA World Cup.

The elections were preceded by the candidates organizing several campaigns on social media, in addition to social meetings in the tribal councils.
