Iran renews its calls for prisoner exchange with US

TEHRAN, April 27 (YPA) – Iran has renewed its call for a prisoner exchange with the United States, while the two sides continue talks with world powers on Washington’s return to the nuclear deal.

“We want to release all those unjustly detained in American prisons because of the sanctions,” Iranian government spokesman Ali Rabiei said in a press conference on Tuesday.

Rabiei added, “Iran is pursuing this for humanitarian and moral considerations, but this will depend on the work of the American side.”

He continued, “Iran announced its readiness for this, but announcing the names of the prisoners may harm them.”

The spokesman pointed out that “the number of Iranians in American prisons exceeds the number of Americans detained in Iran.”

In late 2019, Iran released a graduate student at Princeton University who had been held for three years on charges of espionage, while the United States released an Iranian stem cell researcher who was accused of violating US sanctions against Tehran.
