UN Security Council convenes to discuss situation in Ethiopia

SANAA, Nov. 25 (YPA) – The Security Council decided to hold its first meeting on the conflict in Tigray, Ethiopia, on Tuesday, at the request of European members, after a first meeting was canceled due to the failure of representatives of African countries to attend.
A European diplomat told “Agence France Presse”, speaking on condition of anonymity, that France, Britain, Belgium, Germany and Estonia wanted to “raise the issue” of the weeks-long fighting.
The secret discussion was canceled earlier after South Africa, Niger, Tunisia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines withdrew their request because the envoys had not yet traveled to Ethiopia.
In mid-November, the 15 members of the Security Council touched on the ongoing conflict in Tigray, but those discussions were not formal as they took place during a virtual monthly lunch hosted by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, according to diplomats.
