Video: Torrential rains cause floods in Southern Yemen

ADEN, June 4 (YPA) – The southern and eastern provinces of Yemen have on Thursday and Wednesday afternoon witnessed heavy rains which have caused massive torrential floods in all areas, washing away countless cars and vehicles, in addition to damaging many houses and commercial shops, local sources said.

In Aden, the heavy rains caused floods poured rapidly through the streets of the districts of al-Mualla, Craiter, Serah, Attawahi and al-Buraiqeh, entering hundreds of houses and shops and causing heavy material losses.

On Wednesday, at least 13 Yemenis were killed and dozens injured in the east of the country by torrential rains caused by Cyclone Nisarga, an official told AFP.

“Thirteen Yemenis, including five children, were killed as an initial toll, and dozens were injured by torrential rains that hit some Hadhramaut districts,” the official said.

“The most directorates  have suffered this tropical depression, he said, adding that “the heavy rains have been for three days and caused floods that washed away dozens of houses, especially those close to the valleys.”

The official confirmed that five people were still missing in the al-Qatn district.

In nearby Shabwah province, dozens of houses were damaged by torrential rains, the official added.

According to the Yemen Meteorological Center, the tropical depression is heading west towards Aden, Taiz and Sana’a, with a direct impact on the Desert, Hadhramaut valley and Mahrah.

Since Monday, Yemen’s eastern provinces have been witnessing tropical depression, heavy rains and torrential rains, displacing dozens of families and destroying a number of homes and roads.
