Armed attack targets US convoy in Mozambique

SANAA, Feb. 23 (YPA) – A convoy of vehicles belonging to a US oil and gas company has been attacked in northern Mozambique, France Press Agency reported on Friday.

The agency quoted sources within the oil company Anadarko as saying that the attack targeted the convoy at 15.00 on Thursday, on a road linking the city of Musimbua da Praia Palma Center sensitive to the oil industry.

The sources confirmed that the unidentified attackers cut the road in front of the convoy and attacked with firearms, adding that the attack did not result in casualties among the elements of the convoy.

The region is witnessing of the  continued security tension due to the activities of armed Islamist groups, especially after the Islamic insurgency that broke out a year ago in Cabo Delgado and claimed the lives of more than 100 civilians.

Anadarko has invested billions of dollars in gas reserves discovered off the north-eastern coast of Mozambique.
