CSTO: America’s presence in Afghanistan threatens regional situation

SANAA, Feb. 7  (YPA) –  The head of the General Staff of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Anatoly Sidorov, said that the US presence in Afghanistan threatens regional security.

“The activities of America and NATO in Afghanistan are complicating the situation in the region,” Sidorov said a news conference in the media group “Russia-Segodnia” on Wednesday.

“For more than 17 years of their military presence in Afghanistan, Washington and Brussels have been unable to achieve any significant results in the fight against terrorist groups,” he said.

Sidorov indicated that the United States deliberately refuses to cooperate with Russia to resolve the Afghan conflict, seeking to maintain its influence in the Central Asian region, but the United States does not have a clear strategy to restore peace in Afghanistan.

Sidorov said that America is benefiting from its presence in Afghanistan not to stabilize the situation there, but to put pressure on neighboring countries and countries competing in the region, pointing out that these countries are “Russia, Iran and China.”
