Tsunami kills over 60 people in Indonesia

SANAA, Dec. 23 (YPA) – More than 60 people were killed and hundreds injured as a tsunami struck Indonesia’s Sunda Strait on Saturday night following a volcano explosion, causing panic among residents and tourists.

The tsunami, which hit the coast of southern Sumatra and the western tip of Java about 9:30 p.m. (1430 GMT) following the eruption of a volcano known as the “child” of the legendary Krakatoa, national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

He indicated that 62 people were killed and 584 injured, noting over 20 people went missing.

Spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that the death toll expected to rise, adding that the tide had destroyed hundreds of homes.
