Georgian presidential election kicks off

SANAA, Oct. 28 (YPA) – At least 3705 polling stations opened to citizens in 84 centers across Georgia on Sunday to cast their ballots in the presidential election, in which 25 candidates are competing for the country’s highest positions.

This is the last election by direct vote in this former Soviet republic, where the election of the president for the next term will be given six years to 300 elected members of parliament instead of direct voting.

According to the experts, the competition will be confined to the current elections between the former independent candidate, Salome Zorabashvili, backed by the ruling party “Dream Georgian” and Grigol Vashadze, a candidate of the unified opposition bloc “the force in unity,” while the latter is a supporter of the former Georgian President Annexes Mikhail Saakashvili.
