48 dead, hundreds of people injured as quake hits Indonesian’s Sulawesi

SANAA, Sept. 29 (YPA) – At least 48 people killed and hundreds of people injured after a series of earthquakes and a tsunami struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, according to a preliminary tally released by the spokesman of the Disaster Management Agency on Saturday.

At least 48 people have died since Friday and authorities are warning that the death toll may increase in the coming days, Indonesia’s Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

Earlier of the month, an earthquake struck the Indonesian tourist island of Lombok, killing more than 430 people.

 The geological survey center reported that “the quake 7.9 magnitude “,  was followed by strong aftershocks.

 

According to Indonesian authorities, more than 70,000 people are homeless, sleeping in fragile shelters amid difficult humanitarian conditions and lack of assistance.
