Reuters: Saudi Arabia is the biggest loser of Biden’s victory

SANAA, Nov. 9 (YPA) – Reuters raised the issue of Saudi leadership not congratulating Democratic candidate Joe Biden in the US presidential election despite congratulations from many Arab and world leaders.

why Riyadh “slow down” in congratulating Biden, and said that Saudi Arabia, likely to lose more than any other Arab country due to Biden’s victory, Reuters  News Agency asked.

“Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has remained silent regarding the US elections for hours, although he congratulated the Tanzanian president on his re-election, while other Arab countries rushed to congratulate the democratic rival,” the agency said in a report on Saturday.

“The close personal ties between Bin Salman and Trump have provided an important barrier in the face of a wave of international criticism of Riyadh’s human rights record, the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and Riyadh’s role in the Yemen war and the arrest of Saudi women activists,” the report said.

The earlier points could be the subject of friction between Biden and Saudi Arabia, a major oil exporter and major buyer of US weapons.

Reuters recalled that Biden had pledged in his campaign to reassess relations with Saudi Arabia, to demand more accountability for those responsible for Khashoggi’s death at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, and called for an end to US support for the Yemen war.

It also highlighted the disregard of social media platforms in Saudi Arabia for hours after US television networks announced Biden’s victory.

The agency quoted a Saudi girl on a Twitter account as “Dr. Mona”, “The only worse thing than Covid-19 will be Biden-20.”
