Security Council refuses to adopt a Russian draft resolution on Syria

SANAA, July 11 (YPA) – UN Security Council rejected on Friday night a second draft resolution submitted by Russia on keeping only one border crossing on the Syrian-Turkish border to deliver humanitarian aid.

The President of the Security Council, German Ambassador Christoph Heusgen, announced that the draft resolution received only four votes, compared to seven countries who voted against it, while the remaining four countries abstained.

Russia and China have used their veto power in the UN Security Council against a German-Belgian draft resolution that would extend the mechanism for bringing aid into Syria without coordination with its government.

On Tuesday, Russia and China voted to prevent the council from extending its year-long approval of humanitarian aid through the crossings between Turkey and Syria. Russia then put forward its own proposal, which includes opening only one crossing for 6 months.
