Britain to punish foreigners, including Saudis, for human rights violations

LONDON, July 6 (YPA) – Britain is intending to impose sanctions on foreigners, including Saudis, for their involvement in human rights violations, some of whom were involved in the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Riyadh Consulate in Turkey 2018.

British “Financial Times” newspaper reported on Monday that Foreign Minister Dominique Rapp intends to impose a visa ban and freeze assets on some foreigners for their involvement in human rights violations.

The newspaper stated that it is expected that there would be Saudis and Russians among the targeted by the national version of the “Magnitsky Law”, the name of a lawyer who died in Moscow prison in 2009.

In his interview with the newspaper, Rapp indicated that “the program can be expanded later this year to include issues such as corruption. Other issues could be added, such as the suppression of journalists and the mistreatment of people because of their religious beliefs.”

Turkish judiciary began last Friday the trial of 20 accused in the case of the murder of the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed inside his country’s consulate in Istanbul in 2018.

Among those accused of assassinating Khashoggi were Saud Al-Qahtani, adviser to the Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Ahmed al-Asiri, deputy chief of Saudi intelligence at the time, and 18 others.
