Horrific attack on women prison in Taiz cannot be justified: Grande

SANAA, April 6 (YPA) – UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen Lise Grande on Monday said that the horrific attack on the women’s section of the central prison in Taiz province is a violation of international humanitarian principles, which cannot be justified.

Grande expressed, in a statement, her condolences to the families of the victims, wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

The statement stated that the initial reports indicated that six women, including a girl, were killed and at least 11 others wounded when shells hit the women’s section in the central prison in al-Mudhafar district of Taiz province, adding that the number of victims is likely to be more.

The UN official stressed that “it is never possible to justify such strikes that lead to the killing and wounding of defenseless women and children,” considering that this attack is a horrific violation of international humanitarian principles.

She added “We are facing enormous humanitarian problems in the country. There is no reason or justification for the continuation of these strikes and attacks. It is time for the two parties to sit together to find political solutions.”
