UN agencies call on international community to protect aid workers in Yemen

SANAA, April 22 (YPA) – The International organizations operating in Yemen called on all the parties to the conflict to provide guarantees to protect their humanitarian personnel and relief workers.

They also called on the international community to take steps to protect international personnel.

This comes in a joint statement for the organizations condemning the killing of a staff member of the International Commission of Red Cross (ICRC) Hanna Lahoud in Taiz province.

“We are deeply shocked by the killing of an aid worker from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) which occurred today in Taiz province,” the statement said.

Humanitarian organizations in Yemen work in accordance with humanitarian principles of humanity, independence, neutrality, and impartiality to deliver aid to populations affected by violent conflict.

More than three-quarters of Yemen’s population is in need of humanitarian assistance or protection that alleviates suffering and promotes dignity in the context of a war that is depriving many of the things they need to stay alive.
