Mortality rate due to malnutrition rises in Yemen

SANAA, April 17 (YPA) – Undersecretary of Ministry of the Public Health and Population for Care Sector Dr. Mohammed al-Mansour on Tuesday said the rate of mortality resulting from malnutrition has risen dramatically because of the aggression and siege on Yemen.

“More than 2.9 million children, including 400 thousand children under the age of five suffer from acute malnutrition, which results in the death of a child every ten minutes,” Dr. al-Masnour told Yemen Press Agency on the sidelines of an expanded meeting of “Nutrition Block” held at the ministry to discuss malnutrition problem in Yemen.

Dr. al-Mansour called for gathering efforts to support the ministry’s plan to address the problems of malnutrition, noting that the plan aims at reducing the child mortality rate in 45 districts, as well as the incidence rate of malnutrition types.

In the meeting of the “Nutrition Block”, which is consisting of many organizations involved in nutrition work, Director General of Nutrition Department Dr. Abdulfattah al-Mahdi reviewed the Department’s plan being implemented under the supervision of the Health Ministry and supported by UNICEF, WHO and some local and international organizations.
